Open testicular biopsy, also known as TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction), is a simple procedure used to obtain sperm cells directly from the testicle when they are not found in the semen.
It is carried out in men with azoospermia (absence of sperm in the ejaculate) or when the quality of the sperm is very low.
The procedure is performed by making a small incision in the scrotum, usually under local anaesthesia. Through this incision, a small sample of tissue is removed from the testicle.
This sample is analysed by our embryologists in the laboratory to look for sperm cells. Should they be found, the sperm cells are cryopreserved so that they can be used later in an in vitro fertilisation treatment with sperm microinjection (IVF-ICSI).
It is a safe procedure, and often represents a hopeful alternative for men with severe fertility problems.
