ENDOMETRIAL RECEPTIVITY TESTING

Endometrial receptivity is the ability of the inner lining of the uterus (called the endometrium) to allow an embryo to implant properly. This receptive state is critical to achieving pregnancy and only occurs for a few days during each menstrual cycle, known as the implantation window.

During this period, hormonal balance (mainly oestrogen and progesterone) and proper communication between the embryo and the endometrium are key for implantation to be possible

Endometrial receptivity tests (BioER, ERA, ER Map, etc.) are tests that analyse whether the endometrium is in its optimal state of receptivity or not. For this purpose, a small biopsy of the endometrium is performed at the point in time when, according to the cycle, it is expected to be receptive.

The aim of these tests is to detect if there is a displacement of the implantation window, which could explain why some embryos fail to implant, and thus personalise the best time to perform the embryo transfer in a fertility treatment.

Although these tests represent a promising tool, they are still under evaluation and are not recommended for routine use in all fertility treatments. Based on the strongest scientific evidence available to date, it is suggested that they may be useful in cases of repeated implantation failure, especially if other possible causes have been ruled out.
