Techniques and complementary tests

Sperm selection using microfluidics (Zymot®) is performed by means of chip-shaped devices. In these systems, sperm cells “self-select” on the basis of their motility.

Microfluidics involves the manipulation of tiny volumes of fluid that circulate in small-scale microchannel networks, which mimic the conditions that occur when sperm cells travel through the female reproductive tract on their way to the egg cell.

Compared to conventional sperm selection methods, this technique makes it possible to obtain high-quality motile sperm cells with undamaged DNA and lower levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are then used to carry out in vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedures.
