Intrauterine insemination, or artificial insemination, is one of the simplest processes within Assisted Reproduction.
It is indicated to treat cases of infertility of unknown cause or a mild male factor. It consists of preparing the sperm in the laboratory and then placing it in the uterus of the woman.
We refer to AIH when the semen sample comes from the husband and AID when the sample comes from a donor.
This consists of the administration of injectable hormones to achieve the development of two to three mature oocytes in the same cycle. During the stimulation, ultrasound checks are performed to monitor the growth of the ovarian follicles and to schedule the insemination at the appropriate time.
On the day of insemination, the semen sample will be prepared in the laboratory (sperm capacitation), selecting and concentrating the sperm cells with the best motility in order to increase the chances of fertilisation.
This consists of placing a sample of sperm cells, previously capacitated in the laboratory, in the uterus. This is performed using a very fine cannula, which is inserted through the cervix. It is a painless technique that is carried out in the consultation room without the need for anaesthesia.
Once the procedure is completed, the patient can resume her daily activities.
