How many of you have already had more than one Christmas dinner or lunch with work colleagues or school friends?

That time of the year has come when we inevitably put aside our cares and diets to enjoy gatherings around the table and some of the most succulent recipes of the year.

It is completely normal for us to get carried away during these days and take our eye off everything we eat. However, in the case of pregnant women, it is important to pay special attention to some foods that may be counterproductive for your pregnancy.

WE WILL TELL YOU MORE ABOUT IT BELOW

ARE THERE ANY FORBIDDEN FOODS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN AT CHRISTMAS?

First of all, if this is the first Christmas season that you will enjoy as a pregnant woman, we heartily congratulate you! We can already get an idea of how you are going to celebrate this Christmas; how special it is going to be and all the excitement you must be feeling.

For this reason, it is of great importance to follow the dietary advice we will describe below. They are important during the festive season, when we get a little carried away with the celebrations, but it is also important to keep these recommendations in mind and take them into account when preparing your everyday meals.

Firstly, as a general advice, it is very important to avoid overeating or getting stuffed, as this can make you feel more uncomfortable and tired than usual.

It goes without saying that alcohol is completely forbidden during pregnancy, so we are very sorry to say that we recommend making water your celebratory drink this year (they say it is bad luck to toast with water, but pregnant women can get away with anything).

HERE ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT GUIDELINES YOU SHOULD FOLLOW WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR DIET DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON:

  • Dishes should always be well-cooked. Both meat and fish can contain bacteria (for instance, you will surely have heard of the presence of anisakis in raw fish), so, by cooking food well and at high temperatures, these types of organisms are eliminated.
  • In addition, it is highly recommended to eat white meat and fish. They are easy to cook, very low in fat and also a rich source of vitamins.
  • In the case of seafood, a similar situation occurs. Although its consumption, apart from being common at this time of year, is highly recommended due to its low-fat levels, it should not be eaten raw or undercooked.
  • Pâtés and cheeses are two Christmas classics. When buying or consuming them, you should check that the labelling states that the product is pasteurised and, therefore, free of bacteria. This may be the case, for example, of listeria in pâtés.
  • With regard to desserts, we can eat some sugary foods as an exception, but it should be in moderation, as high sugar levels are certainly not beneficial during pregnancy. We recommend substituting them with some of the seasonal fruits that can be found in supermarkets during the Christmas period, but always remember to wash them thoroughly before consumption (as we should also do with the vegetables that are eaten raw).

FINALLY, APART FROM THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR DIET, IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DO SOME EXERCISE, ESPECIALLY ON THOSE DAYS WHEN YOU HAVE HAD A GOOD FEAST.

A leisurely stroll back home or a short morning walk is sufficient.

THIS WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LESS HEAVY AND YOUR BODY WILL THANK YOU!
